NEWS RELEASE - 15-6-2006
Low-voltage network monitoring through the integration of
AMR and distribution management systems
- A PiHa project to start
A development project for the management of low-voltage networks
is going to develop and implement a comprehensive technology
solution for managing 400 V low-voltage networks. The aim
is to achieve this by combining new-generation energy meters,
data communication solutions and distribution management systems
into an entity with an open architecture.
The new solution will improve the quality of power supplied
to customers, as well as electrical and personal safety. Furthermore,
it creates opportunities for better customer service and helps
to develop the operations of an energy company to better correspond
to the needs of customers and partners.
The first phase of the project includes automatic management
of failures in a low-voltage network, as well as customer-specific
load monitoring and power quality control.
Automatic monitoring has this far been used mostly in 20
kV medium-voltage networks. Advanced information and communication
technology can now be used for real-time monitoring of low-voltage
networks as well. This will enable customer-specific monitoring
of power quality and immediate detection of faults such as
fuse blowouts or broken cables.
Low-voltage network management can be based on open metering
technology and system architecture similar to that used in
new-generation AMR systems. This represents a new way of thinking,
as AMR systems have traditionally been viewed mostly as systems
providing billing information.
The participants in the project include ABB Oy, Aidon Oy,
MX Electrix Oy, PowerQ Oy, Tampere University of Technology
and, as the target for practical implementation, the utility
company Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö Oy. The objective
is to start the project now and complete it by next spring.
