Openness will revolutionise the traditional
energy metering system market
Energy users will demand real-time metering data and new services
in future, and energy companies will meet this need by installing
energy meters based on Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) for almost
all users in the next few years.
- In future, energy companies will be reluctant to commit
themselves to solutions based on a single system supplier.
Instead, they will go for combining various technologies more
freely, based on their specific needs. As consequence, the
traditional market positions of energy metering systems will
crumble and the industry will adopt openness as the key concept.
Timo Chrons, Managing Director of Aidon Ltd, is confident
this prediction will be fulfilled. Aidon Ltd specialises in
energy metering and operates not only in Finland, but also
in Sweden and Norway.
- We challenge the operators in this industry to create a
new operating model together with energy companies. It is
essential that we initiate a discussion in order to create
openness and compatibility. We have been committed to starting
the debate and aiming for openness, without compromise, at
all levels of the system. In our opinion, we have succeeded
in this, says Chrons.
Current AMR systems are based on technologies specified by
manufacturers, and due to the lack of openness and compatibility,
energy companies are forced to choose one system supplier
only for the entire system. This hampers system acquisition
and its flexible development, and may also require major one-off
investments.
- In our view, such a low level of openness and compatibility
forms a serious obstacle to further development of energy
metering. In the EU area alone, there are over 200 million
metering points that need to be read on-site. For this reason,
the need for automatic meter reading is huge, but equipment
manufacturers have not been able to combine forces and meet
that need, says Chrons.
Aidon has launched the first energy metering concept based
on openness. The system is characterised by openness throughout,
from its top level all the way to metering energy consumption.
The new energy meter, developed by Aidon, can use several
communications technologies, according to the needs of the
energy company.
Aidon aims at becoming one of the top companies in the industry
in the Nordic countries. The company was founded by highly
experienced operators in the field, who own the majority of
shares together with the staff and capital investors.
Aidon Ltd develops and markets equipment,
software and services for automatic meter reading. The major
customers of the company, which operates in Finland, Sweden
and Norway, are energy companies. Aidon Ltd, founded in 2004,
is owned by corporate management, staff and capital funds.
